The Huskies announced Wednesday that they will be without sophomore guard Nika Mühl for about three weeks, while she deals with stress-pain from an injury she suffered in last year’s NCAA tournament.
This obviously comes as devestating news to Gino Auriemma’s already-depleted backcourt, having lost superstar-guard Paige Bueckers (left knee), and freshman-phenom Azzi Fudd (right foot) already within a month.
“When you lose somebody like Paige, but if you have Nika available it takes some of the sting off,” Auriemma said. “If you have Azzi available, it takes some of the sting off. But when you throw in all three, that’s a real gut-punch.”
Mühl was averaging 16.0 minutes per game, and since Buecker’s injury on Sunday, was expected to be relied upon heavily, especially until Fudd’s expected return, in the next couple of weeks.
When the Huskies travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech on Thursday they will look to freshman Caroline Ducharme, to fill in for their three injured guards. Ducharme played 14 minutes against Notre Dame and scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting. She added 3 rebounds and a block, and was 3-5 from the perimeter.
The Uconn Huskies (5-1) face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-2)Dec.9 at 7pm on ESPN.
