(5-2) Connecticut faces off against (5-2) UCLA in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center
The Never Forget Tribute Classic will happen on Saturday, December 11, at 1PM EST.
The UCLA Bruins are riding high from a blowout victory against San Jose State, a game that ended 112-33 in their favor. Iimar’i Thomas led all scorers with 32 points, 9 rebounds. Natalie Chou chipped in with 31 points, 11 assists. No player on the Spartans scored in double figures and the Bruins outrebounded their opponents 51-18. Jaelynn Penn also threw in 20 points and eight rebounds.
Major question marks remain for the Huskies’ backcourt, since losing freshman Azzi Fudd, and sophomores Nika Mühl and superstar guard Paige Bueckers. Uconn had very poor offensive output on Thursday night, against Georgia Tech, including an outrageously long fourth quarter draught, that didn’t end until less than two minutes left in regulation.
The result was the first loss for Uconn to an unranked team in a long time. They lost 57-44
The Senior Trio of Christyn Williams, Evina Westbrook and Olivia Nelson- Ododa combined for 36 points and 15 rebounds against the Yellow Jackets. While depth is an obvious problem, considering the pile of injuries the Huskies are currently suffering, those 3 seniors are clearly the only 3 players Head Coach Geno Auriemma trusts in Bueckers’ absence.
If the Huskies are going to avoid another bad loss this weekend, one or all 3 of them are going to need to step up big-time.
Connecticut vs. UCLA airs Saturday, 1PM EST on ABC
